Government introduces Digital Markets, Competition & Consumers Bill

On Tuesday 25th April the Government published the Digital Markets, Competition & Consumers Bill in order to address the power wielded by tech giants over UK businesses.

Commenting on the publication, Radiocentre CEO Matt Payton said:

“This Bill is a welcome step in the right direction. It will help address the powerful position held by tech giants and the impact this has on digital competition as businesses increasing operate online. Around a quarter of listening to live radio now takes place online which has created many benefits for broadcasters and listeners, but also poses risks as online platforms become gatekeepers to UK radio content.

This legislation will support innovation and competition for the benefit of consumers, enabling the Digital Markets Unit to explore new areas, particularly around data, that will complement the support for radio outlined in the draft Media Bill.”
