Latest MIDAS survey reveals live radio still dominates listening

RAJAR, the body responsible for measuring radio audiences in the UK, has released its latest MIDAS Survey into all audio listening for summer 2022.

The survey, which is designed to provide context and insight into how, when and where audio content is being consumed, shows that live radio accounts for 71% of time spent listening to audio, followed by on-demand music with 15%.  The proportion of people listening to podcasts is up to a high of 19% reach but still only accounts for a 5% share of listening.  In addition, share of audio listening on smart speakers is still dominated by live radio at 73%.

Commenting on the latest data, Radiocentre’s CEO Matt Payton said:

“It’s great to see that live radio still accounts for the biggest share of listening hours in the UK, making up 71% of time spent listening to all audio according to the latest RAJAR MIDAS report. It’s also interesting to note the extent of radio listening across connected devices, with 73% of listening on smart speakers being to live radio. This demonstrates the importance of Radiocentre’s work in support of legislation in the forthcoming Media Bill to ensure availability, findability and access to UK radio on connected platforms.”
