Keeping the nation smiling: the week in radio

|

We’re currently living through challenging times. Whether you tune in for the news, entertainment or a bit of companionship, it’s never been more important for radio to support its listeners.

You might be working from home, social distancing, or on the frontlines. Radio offers audiences a few moments of distraction, a voice in the room, and a bit of joy in a time when it’s needed more than ever. Some good songs, funny content and a few moments of collective positivity can all have an impact on your day.

Every week, we round up some of the best moments in commercial radio from the last seven days for your enjoyment. Whether you caught them live or want to listen back, check them out below.

Welcome back Kate

On Monday, Kate Garraway returned to the airwaves on Smooth FM. She thanked fellow presenter Myleene Klass for covering her show while she’d been away, as well as listeners for their lovely messages and support for both her and the show.

This week saw the Hometime Conker Championships 2020 semi-finals take place on Absolute Radio – with rules including the allowance of ‘stampies’. Is there anything more autumnal and nostalgic?

Stand up, if your chants are bad

With the football back, JACK Radio’s podcast The Offside Rule has also returned. This week, football commentator Robyn Cowen joins the squad, discussing transfer window updates, parenting role models within the sport, and the worst club anthems.

Let’s talk about six, baby

Fleur East’s Rap Roulette today took on the classic Salt-N-Pepa tune, helping listeners understand the new Rule of Six restrictions that came into effect this week, and what they mean for various situations – from Snow White and the 7 Dwarves to working out in the gym.

When comedians turn into psychics

Ahead of his new comedy special being released, Michael McIntyre joined the Capital FM Breakfast team to share how it feels seeing himself back on a stage, and dispel rumours that he predicted the coronavirus pandemic.
