DEC Myanmar appeal raises over £23 million with help from commercial radio

An appeal, voiced by Smooth Radio and Classic FM presenter, Myleene Klass, in response to the desperate situation in Myanmar following a powerful earthquake, has raised over £23m in donations.
Commercial and community stations, along with digital audio platforms, were provided 30, 20 and 10 second spots in support of the appeal. Including information on how to donate, the campaign reached over 128 million impressions. The appeal was also supported by other media, including ITV and retail partners.
Matt Payton, CEO, Radiocentre said:
Radio stations across the country have provided incredible support for the latest DEC appeal, demonstrating the way that the industry is able to come together and act as a force for good. As ever, the British public have responded generously by providing donations that will enable DEC agencies in Myanmar to provide urgent humanitarian aid.
Saleh Saeed, CEO, Disasters Emergency Committee said:
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has given to the DEC Myanmar Earthquake Appeal so far and helped us to raise over £20 million. More than a month on from the devastating earthquake in Myanmar, millions of people affected still urgently need support. Many have lost their homes, belongings and livelihoods and are living without access to safe shelter, food, clean water and medical care. With monsoon rains due to begin any day, the levels of need remain critical.
Our huge thanks go to our broadcast partners for airing the appeal, reaching millions of viewers and listeners across the UK, as well as the UK Government, who matched £5 million of public donations. Every donation is helping our member charities and their local partners to scale up their work and reach more of the most vulnerable with lifesaving aid. But it will take a long time for communities to recover. We urge the public to please keep donating if they are able.
