DEC appeal for earthquakes in Turkey and Syria hits £158 million

The urgent appeal, voiced by British actor and presenter, Sir Michael Palin, was in support of two major earthquakes that devastated large parts of southern Turkey (now known as Türkiye) and northwest Syria.

A year on and the DEC have announced the donations have reached over £158 million. DEC charities and their local partners have reached over a million people, providing clean water, food, toilets, household items, medical care and working to meet an increasing demand for psychological support.

We want to thank all commercial radio stations who supported the appeal by donating airtime for the 30, 20 and 10 second spots provided in support of the appeal with information on how to donate.

Saleh Saeed, CEO at the DEC, said:

“When the devastating earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria last year, Radiocentre members stepped up as they always do. The reach of commercial radio and the trust that listeners have in their preferred station mean that your contribution to the DEC appeals is absolutely vital. Together we have now raised over £158million. The money raised has done so much to help people affected by the earthquake, and the work goes on as people continue to recover and rebuild. Thanks to you all!”
