Radiocentre’s campaign to reform lengthy Ts&Cs through to next round in Europe

Radiocentre’s campaign to tackle the complicated and costly Terms & Conditions (Ts&Cs) that dog radio ads has cleared the European Commission’s first regulatory hurdle: REFIT* has confirmed that it will consider Radiocentre’s submission in September.

Radiocentre, the industry body for commercial radio in the UK, has been lobbying decision makers for a review of the Consumer Credit Directive for some time. The decision to accept Radiocentre’s submission into the next stage of the REFIT process is a very encouraging signal.

Siobhan Kenny, CEO of Radiocentre says: “Despite the UK’s recent EU Referendum result, are still part of Europe and Radiocentre remains an active part of the campaign for better regulation. We are committed to supporting our European counterparts in their push to achieve better regulation for both the radio industry and radio listeners alike. Tortuous Ts&Cs cost our industry at least £120m every year, so we are extremely pleased that our submission will be considered by the REFIT platform in September.”

A keen supporter of the drive for better regulation, MEP for the West Midlands Daniel Dalton says: “It is clear that the Consumer Credit Directive’s best attempt to protect consumers did not have radio in mind when mandating the complicated Ts&Cs being attached to advertising. I am confident that a small amendment exempting audio will do the trick, improve consumer information and give a boost to business. I am therefore encouraged that the REFIT platform is considering submissions made by Radiocentre, the Association of European Radios and other industry bodies requesting a review of this regulation.”
